Apple's Preview and Quick Look can't open .dwg files, and Autodesk's free DWG TrueView only runs on Windows. Here are the options that do work on a Mac, with the trade-offs of each. (We make Omia, one of the options — the others are described as fairly as we can.)

Autodesk's own CAD program has a Mac version. It opens, edits and plots DWG files exactly as intended.
Autodesk's free web viewer at viewer.autodesk.com opens DWG and many other CAD formats, with markup tools.
LibreCAD is a free, open-source 2D CAD program for Mac. It handles DXF well.
Omia opens DWG and DXF drawings in a Mac (and Windows) app without AutoCAD: zoom, pan, toggle layers, export a vector PDF and fix text or numbers. Nothing is uploaded.
If you only need to read the drawing once, the simplest fix is often to ask whoever sent it to plot it to PDF.
| Works offline | Drawing stays on your Mac | Export to PDF | Edit | Cost | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AutoCAD for Mac | Yes | Yes | Yes | Full CAD | Subscription |
| Autodesk Viewer | No | No (uploaded) | — | Markup only | Free, account needed |
| LibreCAD (via DXF) | Yes | Yes | Yes | 2D CAD | Free |
| Omia | Yes | Yes | Yes (vector) | Text and numbers only | 5 free opens, then $19.90 once |
| PDF from the sender | Yes | Yes | — | No | Free |

No. Preview and Quick Look don't support DWG. You need a CAD program, a web viewer or a dedicated viewer app.
Autodesk Viewer is free in the browser (account and upload required). LibreCAD is free but works best with DXF. Omia opens your first 5 DWG files free; viewing other files is free forever.
No. DWG TrueView is Windows-only.
Use an app that runs locally: AutoCAD for Mac, LibreCAD (after converting to DXF), or a native viewer such as Omia.
AutoCAD for Mac can plot to PDF. Omia exports a vector PDF offline, one page per sheet frame. Online converters work too but upload the file.
