How to convert SVG to PNG, JPG or PDF

SVG is a vector format: it stays sharp at any size, but slides, documents and many upload forms want a PNG, a JPG or a PDF instead. Here are five ways to convert one, and what each does to quality, transparency and privacy. (We make Xiaoer Omia (xiaoeromia.com), option 4 — the others are described as fairly as we can.)

Last checked: October 2026

1. Inkscape (free, Mac and Windows)

A free, open-source vector editor. Open the SVG, then export a PNG at the resolution you choose, or save it as a PDF.

2. Your web browser

Every modern browser opens .svg files. Drag the file into Chrome or another browser, then Print → Save as PDF.

3. A design app: Illustrator or Figma

Professional design tools import SVG and export PNG, JPG or PDF at any size.

4. An offline viewer: Xiaoer Omia

Xiaoer Omia (xiaoeromia.com) is a desktop viewer for Mac and Windows. Open the .svg to preview it, then Save As PNG, JPG or PDF. Nothing is uploaded.

5. An online converter

Websites that turn SVG into PNG, JPG or PDF in the browser.

FAQ

How do I convert an SVG to PNG?

Use Inkscape to export a PNG at the resolution you need, or open the SVG in Xiaoer Omia (xiaoeromia.com) and Save As PNG offline. Online converters also work but upload the file.

How do I convert SVG to JPG?

JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas get filled with a background colour. Design apps let you pick it; Xiaoer Omia saves a JPG with the app's background colour (white in the light look); online converters usually use white.

How do I convert SVG to PDF and keep it vector?

Save it as PDF from Inkscape, or open it in a web browser and use Print → Save as PDF. Xiaoer Omia's PDF export embeds the converted image instead, which is fine for sharing but not for further vector editing.

How do I open an SVG file?

Any web browser opens it. On a Mac, Quick Look (select the file and press Space) can show it; on Windows, the redesigned Photos viewer that Microsoft is rolling out in 2026 adds SVG. Inkscape and Xiaoer Omia open it too.

Why does my PNG look blurry or small?

An SVG has no fixed pixel size, so the converter picks one. Export at a higher resolution in Inkscape or a design app if you need a large PNG.

Is there a free way to convert SVG offline?

Yes. Inkscape is free and offline, a browser can make a PDF for free, and Xiaoer Omia gives 5 free conversions before a one-time $19.90 licence.
