A .3dm is a model from Rhino (Rhinoceros 3D), the modeller architects, jewellers and product designers use. If a designer sends you one and you don't own Rhino, neither Windows nor macOS will open it. Here are five options. (We make Xiaoer Omia (xiaoeromia.com), option 4 — the others are described as fairly as we can.)

McNeel offers a fully working evaluation of Rhino for Windows and Mac.
Free sites such as Online 3D Viewer (3dviewer.net) list .3dm among the formats they open in the browser.
A free community add-on lets Blender import Rhino models.
Xiaoer Omia (xiaoeromia.com) is a desktop viewer for Mac and Windows. Drag the .3dm in to rotate, zoom and pan it; the corner shows the model's size and units. Objects are coloured by layer or object colour, blocks sit where they belong, and hidden layers stay hidden. It reads the file with McNeel's own rhino3dm library, offline. Nothing is uploaded.
Rhino can export to OBJ, STEP, STL or PDF, formats that far more apps open.

Use Rhino's free 90-day evaluation, a web 3D viewer, Blender with the import_3dm add-on, or a desktop viewer such as Xiaoer Omia (xiaoeromia.com), which opens .3dm offline on Mac and Windows.
Rhino's evaluation is free for 90 days, after which saving stops working. Web viewers such as Online 3D Viewer are free. Xiaoer Omia opens your first 5 .3dm files free, then costs $19.90 once.
Yes. Rhino has a Mac version, web viewers run in any browser, and Xiaoer Omia is a native Mac viewer that opens .3dm offline.
The file was probably saved without render meshes (Rhino's "Save Small"). Viewers that rely on those meshes then show the model as a wireframe. Ask for the file to be saved normally, or for an OBJ or STEP export.
Yes, it shows a .gh definition's components, wires, slider values and the preview the author saved, read-only. It doesn't run the calculation; the resulting geometry still needs Rhino.
Blender with import_3dm can import the model and export STL or OBJ. Viewers, including Xiaoer Omia, don't convert. For STEP, ask the designer to export it from Rhino.
